Eurythmy Spring Valley Ensemble will share as the first public premiere the story of Joan of Arc (1412–1431), a part of our middle school program, with a rich tapestry of original music by Grigory Smirnov. The story will be introduced by tone eurythmy and poetry pieces.
In middle school years at a Waldorf school, the students wend their way through history from ancient cultures through medieval times and into the present. On their way, they encounter in the 15th century the pivotal deeds of Joan of Arc, the Maid of Orleans. It is the story of a life that seemed then, and even now, unlikely in a patriarchal culture, led by a prince and determined by the church. In the midst of the chaos and war as part of France was occupied by the English, a young teenage girl is asked by the appearance of spiritual beings to set things aright by vanquishing the English, crowning the prince as the king, and setting Europe on a new course. Indeed, against all odds, she is able to accomplish the unimaginable, and the light shines again in France. The established hierarchical powers cannot abide this girl, and soon her own life is on the way to tragedy, yet, it is transfigured by inner strength, clarity, and faith in the spirit. It seems apt at a time when so much ground needs to be broken for a renewed society based on spiritual capacity and insight in the face of great resistance.
