Come join us for a unique opportunity to experience the majestic rhythms of Japanese Taiko Drumming with the Sakura Taiko Ensemble! Sakura Taiko (Sakura meaning “Cherry Blossom”) was formed by Yoko Battista, founder of “Niji No Kai”, a non-profit organization that supports children of criminals and juvenile delinquents to re-adjust to society. Twelve years ago, Battista decided to have a Japanese Taiko Drumming performance at the Cherry Blossom Festival in the city of White Plains, NY.  She invited Hiroyuki Kurashima, one of the Osuwa School’s Taiko masters and a professional Taiko drummer of his own group “Taiko Masala” (based in Brooklyn). Together they offered to teach free classes to young children so they could perform at the Festival. Still comprised of its initial members since its founding, Sakura Taiko maintains a traditional and modern repertoire of 15 pieces, and encourages and inspires people through local schools, organizations, festivals and celebrations.
